Course Description

This course is a year-long study designed to enable students to apply their Arabic language skills directly to understanding the Quran. The course aims to allow students to become independent learners of the Quran wherein they are confident to engage with the meaning and language of the Quran. Students will be equipped with a practical knowledge to explore the Quran.

Course Objectives

Students will:

  • Be able to apply skills from Candlelight programme and translate the Quran
  • Familiarise oneself with the verses of the Quran
  • Know and recognise the vocabulary of the Quran
  • Describe themes and topics from the Quran
  • Extract contemplations, nasāih and morals from the selected chapters.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the discourse on the purpose of the Qur’ān and ways to engage with the Qur’ān
  • Be able to access Tafseer ibn kathīr with the aid of a dictionary

 

Assessment

Students on the Candlelight Quran course are formally assessed twice a year during the biannual assessment weeks, and throughout the year by assignments. Exams will be in written format, and students may speak to class teachers for information on specific details regarding the exam format for each subject. Assessments may take the form of essays or presentations depending on the module, and students should similarly speak to their class teachers regarding the form of the assessment.

As the course is condensed, students are recommended to revise their class notes on a weekly basis. Students may additionally be given tasks or projects by respective teachers to be carried out throughout the year. Outside of class, students are recommended to spend a minimum of 2-3 hours of study time per week. Students are given a recommended reading list that has been tailored to their program of study.

    A Guided reading of the translation of the Quran where students will have the opportunity to apply their Arabic language skills in this module.

  • Tadabbur 0

    A thematic study of the Quran in order to extract the morals and core principles from the Quran. There will be a focus on a linguistic analysis of the words of the Quran so that students can apply their language skills in understanding the Quran, and specific points of reflection will be focused on throughout the year.

    A module that focuses on the rhetorical devices used in the Quran. Students can explore hermeneutical and linguistic techniques relating to the styles and themes of the Quran.

  • Uloom al Quran 0

    This module will focus on the approach to study the Quran as well the miraculous nature of the Quran focusing on Quranic intertextual and extra-textual coherence. Term two and three of this module focuses on a review of verses related to jurisprudential rulings found within the quran.

This means, one or more of the following listed or unlisted instructor may teach you the subject but are fully qualified in their relevant field and teach at EIIS.Ustadh Nasar IshfaqUstadh Nasar is a chartered Architect by profession, having undertaken his Islamic studies under various scholars, including: Ustadh Kifayatullah, Shaykh Abu Eesa Niamatullah (Fiqh and Adab), Shaykh Kehlan al-Jubury (Tafsir, Ulum al-Tafsir, Aqidah, Fiqh, Hadith and Adab), Shaykh Anis (Tafsir and Fiqh), Shaykh Abu Islam (Arabic) and Shaykh Awadallah Yusuf (Tajwid), and Shaykh Akram Nadwi (Fiqh, Sirah and Tafsir).Shaykh BilalUstadh Bilal Brown accepted Islam in 1999 and went to study Arabic in the Arab world in 2004 where he became fluent within 6 months. He graduated from 4-year intensive course in Shari’ah studies at the Al-Dawli Institute of Arabic and Islamic Sciences in Damascus in 2012 in addition to studying privately with scholars in Damascus. He then furthered his studies in the Shafi’i jurisprudence, Arabic grammar and self-rectification. He has studied and taught several texts in the Hanafi and Shafi’i schools of law and marriage and divorce law in the Maliki School. He also has 2 years of experience tackling alcohol and drug addiction as well as several further years of experience working with and teaching young people. He also has certificates in childcare, IT, social science, and counselling. Guided Quran translation 

Ustadh Hamza and Shaykh Fahim

(Double Module)

Students will have the opportunity to apply their Arabic language skills in this module wherein they will be taught the translation of the full Quran.

Tadabbur (Tuesday 6.45pm-7.35pm)

Shaykh Fahim

(Single Module)

A thematic study of the Quran in order to extract the morals and core principles from the Quran. Uloom al Quran (Saturday 10.20-11.10)

Ustadh Hamza and Ustadh kashif

(Single Module)

A module based on the sciences related to the Quran that allows students to study the miraculous nature of the Quran focusing on Quranic intertextual and extra-textual coherence.

Tafseer: Quranic Exegisis (Saturday 12.20-2.00) (Double Module)

Shaykh Fahim and Shaykh Bilal

(Double Module)

This module allows students to engage with classical works of tafseer in order to understand the deeper meanings of the verses.
